Growing up as a minority in the South, Kelly Lu rarely saw representations of her race. She was raised in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and recently graduated with a degree in Studio Art from the College of Charleston. Her work references ideas of rebellion, the contrast between youth and death, the turmoil of becoming an adult, and the struggle to find an identity. Lu creates semi-autobiographical drawings using ink, marker, and acrylic on various surfaces, influenced by post-war Japanese art.
